Jonathan Bailey Holland is the Jack G. Buncher Head of the Carnegie Mellon University School of Music. Holland’s works have been commissioned and performed by the orchestras of Atlanta, Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Colorado, Dallas, Detroit, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Memphis, Minnesota, National, Philadelphia, San Antonio, St. Louis, and South Bend; soloist Awadagin Pratt with Roomful of Teeth and A Far Cry; Concerto Soloists of Philadelphia; Eighth Blackbird; Orchestra 2001; BBC Symphony; Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and many others. He has received awards and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, The Boston Foundation, Civitella Ranieri Foundation, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Fromm Foundation at Harvard University, American Academy of Arts & Letters, American Music Center, ASCAP, the Presser Foundation, and others.
Holland has served as composer-in-residence with the Cincinnati Symphony, Detroit Symphony, and South Bend Symphony Orchestras, Plymouth Music Series of Minnesota, Ritz Chamber Players, and the Radius Ensemble. His work can be heard on recordings by the Cincinnati Symphony, University of Texas Trombone Choir, Radius Ensemble, Transient Canvas, and more.
Holland received his B.M. from the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied composition with Ned Rorem. He holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University, where he studied with Bernard Rands, Mario Davidovsky, Andrew Imbrie, and Yehudi Wyner. Holland is also a member of the composition faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music. He was a founding faculty member of the music composition program at Vermont College of Fine Arts and has served on the faculties of Berklee College of Music and Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
