Thomas Cabaniss writes for opera, theater, dance, film, and the concert stage. When not composing, he helps others compose their own music, especially those who may have no musical training at all. His opera The Sandman played over thirty performances in New York in 2002-2003, and he is working a new chamber opera based on a DuBose Heyward play, BRASS ANKLE. He created the score for The Lunch Date (winner of the Academy Award and Palme D'Or for Best Short Film) and Mamba’s Daughters, (winner of an Obie Award and a Drama Desk nomination). With choreographer Hilary Easton, he has created music for evening length dance pieces (The Short-Cut, It’s All True, NOISE + SPEED, and The Reclamation) that premiered at Danspace, the 92nd Street Y's Harkness Dance Series, and the Duke Theater on 42nd Street. Recent chamber music performances include his String Quartet No. 2 - Three Dance Grooves (Tessera Quartet) and Tiny Bits of Outrageous Love for piano four hands (Michael Shinn and Jessica Chow Shinn). He is a member of the Juilliard faculty (since 1998), and he is Composer-in-Residence for Carnegie Hall’s LinkUp orchestra education programs. Tiny Bits of Outrageous Love (for piano four hands) is written for the husband wife duo of Michael and Jessica Shinn. They premiered the piece at The Juilliard School in May 2012 at the composer’s 50th birthday recital, and subsequently performed it at venues across the country, including a gala for pianoSonoma, the festival they founded in Santa Rosa, California in 2011. The piece was also featured at the Festival of Authors and Ideas in Carmel in the Fall of 2012. It is in seven movements and was inspired by the Brahms Waltzes for piano four hands. It is dedicated to the composer’s wife, Deborah. A note: the sixth movement involves some spoken interjections and simple theatrics.

Celestial Fire was commissioned for the 2012-13 season by Francisco J. Núñez and the Young People’s Chorus of New York City for their Radio Radiance program, a collaboration with WWFM.org. It is written for SATB (or SSA) and live looping technology. It uses a text by the 7th century Hebrew poet, Yannai, which has been adapted by the composer.

Three Sabbaths is a set of three songs for chorus and piano, derived from a piece for chorus and orchestra. Three Sabbaths has a text by poet Wendell Berry and was commissioned and premiered by the Columbia University Bach Society in 2006. What Stood Will Stand is the first, followed by Over The River in Loud Flood and The Dark Around Us, Come. The SATB piano version was premiered at Berea College in Kentucky in 2010.
