The Rood Song
8th Century Ruthwell Cross

"The Dream of the Rood" is one of the earliest Christian poems in Old English. It is carved upon an 18-foot high stone cross that was originally erected in the 8th Century and which today stands in a village church in the south of Scotland. The poem's author is anonymous, though tradition has long held that it was the 7th-Century poet, Saint Caedmon. Of the poem's 156 verses, only 26 are carved into the stone cross known as the rood of Kirk Ruthwell. In the poem, the dreamer narrates a vision of the Crucifixion, while the cross, the Holy Rood, is given its own voice to recount Christ's suffering upon it.
